For all those who are interested, I did find a solution to the read-only 
datasource issue.  There is an undocumented HS initialization parameter:
HS_FDS_TRANSACTION_MODEL=READ_ONLY


This turns off all transactional behaviour for the data source, making it a 
read-only source.
