I have seen 8i survive various OS upgrades and it would not have surprised me to hear you had it running after an upgrade. I am a bit surprised that you have it running on a freshly installed XP.
I'm guessing - you got to the machine before any trace of Java was installed on it. Based on the descriptions from others and on personal experience (personal on other OSs esp. Linux, not XP), any other JVM could cause some grief.
