But I'll mention one exception, just in case someone is hoping that
there really are opportunities. I don't actually know any "junior" DBAs
... but I do know a couple of "intern" DBAs. Are they the same?
One intern DBA works for a bank (credit union, actually). The honcho from a small construction firm came in to apply for a loan. They got to talking and my friend, we'll call him Carlo, asked if they had a DBA for their Oracle db. Carlo has (had) no experience. He'd just read a few manuals and books. The Linux sysadmin at the construction firm was double-hatted as their DBA. Carlo got the job part-time as an intern. The pay is terrible - minimum wage - but he's getting experience. He'll need it to explain Oracle concepts better than he can now. You see, the construction company treats Oracle like it was a file system ... Carlo schedules hourly RMAN backups to make them happy. Some day Carlo will know enuf to be able to explain to them that online redo logs make Oracle different than a file system.
Maybe that's why only the small companies hire junior or intern DBAs.
