I hate to be the pessimist, but he may be better off with the trigger/procedure approach. Many managers could care less of how you do it, as long as it gets done and gets done quickly. Also, if there are other programming jocks with in earshot when he proposes the "right" solution, they'll make him look like a fool.

Propose both solutions. Make a recommendation. Let the manager decide. Document it.

Remember, that in the long run, we are dead.
