IMP-00009 related to LONG RAW?

Hi,
I've been experiencing problems importing table records (using imp) from an export dump {IMP-00009: abnormal end of export file}. I have tried repeated
exports (exp) but the problem persists. Searches against archives of this group as well as on askTom seemed to suggest a higher value for BUFFER but even that did not seem to work.
The table includes a LONG RAW column. LONG RAW seems to be discouraged in favour of LOBs since Oracle 8. Would this have anything to do with the problem? Moving to LOBs to test out this assumption is rather expensive in the version of Oracle I have (8.1.7.3).
Also, would the value of RECORDLENGTH have any impact in this matter?

regards and thanks in advance
george
