Did you follow the installation instructions on the CD or available at http://docs.oracle.com or did you decide to just wing it?

If you didn't follow the instructions ... failure is assured. If you did have you verified permission on the directories? That the groups are created properly and Oracle is a member of both groups? And that you have made the appropriate changes to /etc/system?
