How to recognise which Oracle client version is installed on an Unix box

Hi,

Is there a sure-fire way to recognise which version is the Oracle client currently installed on an Unix box ?
I look for some automated way to tell, in a shell script, if the version is, for example, 8.1.7, or 9.0.1, and take different actions.
