Well, IE is just smart enough to recognize that you indeed want to
access a resource through HTTP (and it is even smart enough to figure
out that when accessing FTP.somedomain.com you actually want
ftp://ftp.somedomain.com :), so it automatically prepends correct
protocol to the incomplete URL you typed in. But as soon as you add
an unknown port (say, 8080), it is unable to automatically guess which
protocol you want to use and does not make any assumptions, so you
have to prepend the URL with correct protocol yourself.
