Because we have ID-cards (for time registration) given out to our employees, and when one employee leaves the company, his ID-card-number is deleted.

When we know which one is free we can assign his former ID-card-number to new employees who join the company.

(If I would have written the software, I would have added a field "free/assigned", but the vendor didn't.)

I think, the answers I got for my question will help me for now.
