Listener config explanation needed

I am trying desperately to figure out the listener configuration for 8i on Win2K. I upgraded a system from 8.0.6 to 8.1.7, I couldn't connect to any of the DBs, even with sqlplus. I went through the Net8 Configuration Assistant at least 15 or 20 times, all I could get was could not resolve TNS service name when I tested.

I finally got it to work by going into tnsnames.ora and editing the connect data from (SERVICE_NAME = xxx) to (SID = xxx).

Can someone please explain why this had to be done, or even better, where I can find some comprehensible documentation that explains it.
