Java's not that hard to learn. Just a language, not more complex than C++ (even simpler in some sense). Getting yourself familiar with all APIs J2SE and J2EE have to offer is another story, though Java designers had put a lot of effort to make it as easy as they could (naming conventions, packaging and all that stuff...) But it certainly doesn't take a year to learn, couple of months is more like it. Get yourself a free copy of Borland JBuilder 7 Personal (http://www.borland.com/jbuilder) and you'll be writing cool Java applications in a few weeks. :)
