Time to become competent DBA

My company is examining its database support options for Oracle Financials (database is 8i on HP-UX). One option is for me to do it. I've done the Enterprise DBA Part 1A: Architecture and Administration course, but haven't had much opportunity to put it into proctice. I spent a year writing reports using SQL*Plus and PL/SQL, have set a Linux network up at home and build and administer applications with MS SQL Server backends. With the appropriate support from my firm, what is a reasonable timescale to become a competent DBA (or how long should we hire someone to transfer their skills)?

Thanks
