The reason is that I want my students to be able to perform some DBA-type activities such as modifying tnsnames.ora, sqlnet.ora, listener.ora, initSID.ora, move tablespaces, etc.
What I really want them to have is full access to everything except root.
Yes they will trash the machine. That is why there is back-ups and instructors. ;-)
