I got into the business about 18 months ago. First off you can download the software for free from technet.oracle.com or you can get a big package of stuff for $40. Oracle makes its money off of licensing. Dont worry about it if you just want to learn.

To start with only focus on the Database 9i. Get that installed. Install Oracle Forms. It is part of the Internet Application Developer suite. Ignore EVERYTHING else. Stay focused .

Go to the bookstore and look for a SQL and PL/SQL workbook. Do not get the big thick ones. Look for one that has the word workbook in the title. These will have exercises for you to use. Start by doing the SQL book. Then do the PL/SQL book. You will learn and forget stuff. Perfectly normal. What seems simple may take you a long time to learn etc... happens. Just dont get frustrated.

Getting these down will take some time to do it right. You probably want to go through it and give it a quick read first to get an idea where they are going. Then go back and do the exercises.

After you do that do the following...

Look for a workbook on Oracle Forms.. its a Graphical tool. What you do with that is make a pretty page like windows so your users can access the data easier. You have to write code to make it work. Its pretty much all SQL and PL/SQL code. Do not worry about this until you get SQL and PL/SQL down. Then find a forms workbook. This may be harder. There are alot of lousy forms books out there(also bundled with other stuff and called Oracle Developer). Look for a thin one that has exercises for you to do.

Come back here and go to the other newsgroups and forums on technet and ask lots of questions. Knowing Access helps. Did you write an SQL? Not know programming languages will make using this hard and take you a while. Since everything is new. These are not tools designed for users, but for programmers. So they are not that simple.

Just be patient and realize that it will take alot of time and effort. "Paul Dorris" <pdorris_at_frontiernet.net> wrote in message news:u860fcrbcl4kc4_at_corp.supernews.com...
