9i Install linking issue on Linux

Okay, I'm going to one last time be optimistic; & give here an overview of the options I've gone through in order to get over this Linking issue in installing 9i on Linux. I'd be overwhelmingly grateful for any other ideas, insights (i.e., if I've overlooked the obvious, followed an instruction incorrectly, etc.).

I installed the older binutils (2.10.0.18-1) &, on linking the installer gives me the error:

"Error in invoking target mkldflags of makefile /$ORACLE_HOME/network/lib/ins_net_client.mk"

I get that error (it is the identical error to the one I get if I've got one of the newer versions installed, incl. the latest), open a new terminal logged in as oracle & edit the file $ORACLE_HOME/bin/genclntsh to no longer include the "-z defs" in LD_SELF_CONTAINED. I get the following output:

"$ORACLE_HOME/bin/genclntsh
cat: $ORACLE_HOME/lib/ldflags: No such file or directory Created $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libclntst9.a"

Is this good? I've got the line in genclntsh as follows: LD_SELF_CONTAINED="" I go back into the installer & it locks up on me. I've no option but to get out of it & give up. The first time, once I'd given up on this
& finding *other* instructions online, I got & installed binutils
2.10.91.0.4-1 instead. On linking in the installer, I get the error. In other words, I've followed to the letter the options given in the instructions on http://www.idevelopment.info/data/DBA_tips/DBATIP_53.shtml
& others for getting it installed & linked; but I get the error in
each instance. I've got no ideas left; &, if I'm not overlooking the obvious, no other options in front of me. Of course, others have gotten it installed; & therefore it is illogical for me to give up. Once again, I'd be grateful for any insights on this... Thank you,
