Primary key index performance

Hi everyone,

   I was wondering. Is there a way to alter a primary key index to improve its performance ( let's say by boosting the degree ) ?

   If not what are the classic performance optimisation that one would do in order to make 10k select statement faster ( i mean a LOT faster ) :-)
