Thanks for your reply. What I did is simply reinstall Red Hat 7.1 but this time I also installed blackdown jdk 1.1.8 v3 rather than Sun's JDK. It seems to work: even though it says it's for glibc 2.1 it works with glibc 2.2.2.
This time sqlplus works fine and I got no complaints about libclntsh.so.9.0 but the installation program stalls at the "Configuration Tools" menu, just after the installation. In particular Oracle Network Configuration Assistant seems to stall forever (it's been a whole eight hourse now, and the ethernet lights are still rapidly blinking, so I am simply going to end the installer program and possibly have a closer look at the manual).
At least I got sqlplus to work,
