If and only if you have a capable Unix Sysadmin/DBA in house. Your choice of Oracle platform should first be dictated by the skills and experience available to you. In fact your choice of database platform should probably also be dictated by the same factors. In fact I'd suggest that there is a good chance that your comments about backups and stability are directly related to the skill mix in your shop (assuming you are testing on the same hardware).

If your experience is only win2k/NT then go with 8.1.7 and win2k.
