Within the bin directory of each ORACLE_HOME is a file that contains the
"location" within the registry for this home. When an application runs from
this bin directory, it reads the oracle.key file to know where in the
registry to get the environment.
So, with Windows operating systems, it is not really necessary to change ORACLE_HOMEs like it is on Unix machines. There is an ORACLE_HOME selector, that basically changes the path so when you execute programs from the command line, it finds the intended home first in the path.
