install problems

I've tried to install both personal oracle8 and oracle9 lite on my win98 SE machine and have the same problem with both.

After downloading the zip file and then unzipping it into a directory, the setup.exe found there reports that it can't find the jre.

Each attempt to fix the problem simply runs into a further install problem (I won't detail them) so I'm stuck.

Is there something basic I'm missing? I mean, I would have expected this to install right out of the 'box'.

TIA

Here's the error message I get with trying to run setup.exe from the directory in which I've unzipped the files. Note the inconsistent path name delimiters of both '/' and '\' in the same pathname. Also, the JRE is in fact installed per the default java installation, although it is a later rev, 1.2.1, I believe.

Oracle Universal Installer

The Java Run Time Environment was not found at ../../stage/Components/oracle.swd.jre/1.1.6.30/1/DataFiles/Expanded/jre\win32\bin\jre.exe

Hence, the Oracle Universal Installer cannot be run.
Please visit http://www.javasoft.com and install JRE version 1.1.7 and
try again.
