advice on training methods for 8i

hello,
I'm looking for training for oracle 8i DBA track. What do experienced professional DBA's have to say about which method is best or most cost effective.
I was wondering about Sybex Oracle 8i DBA pack or some CBT's from SmartCertify. The sybex books with a virtual trainer cost around 200 bucks. The smart certify CD's cost 2800 bucks.
I have access to the software so that's not a problem. There are also several IT training centers here in Houston that have six week training seminars and then test you for the certification. They cost around $10K. I'm skeptical about those IT training places, I've met several people who went to those places and have been very dissapointed with the results........
