In that case, you could check out Oracle's Discoverer. The end user layer makes it useful for non-tech users, there is a query duration predictor which indicates approximate duration for the query & allows users to cancel, the interface has won awards for ease of use (by non-techs), and the resulting 'reports' casn be published to Reports for further refinement and automated distribution.
