How about when you are on the server and use the ORACLE_SID env var or
registry key.
Your advice is going to result in a hybrid environment!
Other than that the initial advice is incomplete because controlfile names, the init.ora's name and some init.ora's contents need to be changed as well.
And of course : 8.0.5 is desupported
