Oracle 9i and RHLinux 7.1 linking errors

I'm trying to install Oracle 9i on RedHat 7.1. Everything goes fine until
the linking stage of the install and well at that point it all goes to hell.
I had the exact same problem with 8i and eventually gave up after trying 101
different how-tos. Anyone know what I should try next?
