I was taken on at my position under NT/Unix technical on the understanding that I'd be mentored under the existing DBA.

I have to say that if I'd been dropped in it myself on day 1, then I'd really have been in trouble - and most probably unemployed. If you're stuck in this position now, then I recommend you grab the Oracle documentation and, if you read nothing else, read the Oracle Concepts chapter. And the books Daniel mentioned would be helpful as well. If you're spending (and the company is willing to train), then ask them to buy you the OCP materials NOW! AW
