8i / 9i / Java question

We are encountering problems with defunct / zombie processes in a sun environment running 8i. It was observed that this problem started when Java server code was installed on the machine. The assumption that is being made by internal DBA's, and Oracle is that the 8i code does not adequetly support the Java Server envirionment and consequently processes become lost under certain conditions. The recommendation is to move up to 9i.

What are peoples experience with :

9i , is it reliable? It seems new, so I am naturally suspect. Does it support Java better?
Java , has anyone experienced the defunct process issue noted above and what was the fix?
