Help: Installed objects are gone

We are trying to upgrade our
database from 8.1.6 to 8.1.7.
But after we started the universal
installer, and try to deinstall
8.1.6 stuff, Oracle tells us that
no products are installed.
Could we skip the deinstallation
and go ahead to install 8.1.7,
and later on just delete the 8.1.6
folder?

Any input is highly appreciated.
