Doug,
Since you didn't include your platform and RDBMS version, I can only assume that you are on Linux. I say this because a quick search on Metalink showed that your message is coming from Oracle on Linux. There are multiple bugs associated with this error message. You'll have to contact Oracle Support for a resolution.
