Oracle8 client connection to Oracle7 server

Just wondering if anyone has had any joy with Oracle8 clients talking to and old Oracle7 database server?

My particulars are sql*plus version 8.1.7.0.0 (on RedHat 6.2) trying to talk to server version 7.2.2.3.0 (on SCO OpenServer!)

The listener trace seems correct but the client exits with good old ORA- 03113: end-of-file on communication channel

Any tips/tricks/ideas would be much appreciated!
