Preston,
I got 8.1.7 installed on my RH7.0 after major battle. I had the same problem as
you had.
Finally I chose the 'create install scripts' option in the dbassistant instead
of trying to
create the DB with the GUI. The shell/SQL script DB creation worked fine and
now
my Oracle is running with no problems.
