Hi,
my personal recommendation would be :

- Oracle8i Personal Edition on Win2000 Professional.
- Get Toad for PL/SQL Stored Procedures etc.
- Use jDeveloper/jBuilder for Java.

Oracle Lite is not up to scratch. I have 8.1.6 and it is a messy product to install. Some of it's bugs are rather silly (if you have data containing of ";" in a varchar2, Oracle Lite may treat is as a new command, or may not. So INSERT INTO xxx VALUES ('abcdefg;hijk') will work on all except Oracle Lite.)

Oracle 8i Standard is also a good bet (especially if you want to do stuff in Java).

You won't need 2000 Server unless you want to do some fancier stuff with replication or so.
