There is no easy answer to this. The bottom line : - if you have lots of updates to the database and if data is important to you, buy Oracle. - if you just want to play around wit a database get MySQL (it's free on Linux and Shareware on NT/2000) - if you like MS Tools like Visual Studio - buy SQL-Server
Now comparing SQL-Server to Oracle8i EE is like comparing a bicycle to a truck.
Oracle Standard Edition is on a par to SQL-Server as far as the basics goes. But just wait until the server crashes, and you will be in a whole new ballgame. Or just try developing a very complex application which does updates accros multiple tables and you get into deadlock situations. Then you will learn to appreciate Oracle.
There are and have been many threads on this issue, so look at the archives of this NG in deja and search for SQL-Server or MS-SQL.
