Installation Questions

All,

I'm trying to install Oracle 8.1.6 on Solaris x86 8.0. The Enterprise Edition CD came with my Solaris 8.0 distribution. I'm new to Oracle, so sorry if these are Oracle 101 questions.

I've got one machine here to do my development work. Doing some reading in an O'Reilly book, it said that the Personal Edition allows development activities on a single machine.

The reason I ask is that during the installation, I have the following three options:

  1. Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition
  2. Oracle 8i Management Infrastructure
  3. Oracle 8i Client

I need the precompilers, and they're listed as part of the client install.

Can I install the precompilers and work on one machine (client/server app) if I install the Enterprise Edition? Or, will I need another machine to run as a client while a second machine runs only as a server?

Based on the downloads, it appears that the x86 version of Solaris isn't as widely supported as some of the other platforms. Is this correct?

Thanks,
