Oracle 8i and ODBC

I'm using Oracle 8i Personal Edition on Windows 98.

I'm trying to use an enterprise project management software package to access the Oracle database and am having problems. Besides the starter database (named "MyDatabase") loaded during Oracle 8i Typical Installation, I created a separate tablespace and ran some scripts that created objects for the EPM software. The EPM software documentation describes these objects collectively as a "Data Set".

  1. Can someone explain in simple English the difference between Data Source Name and Data Source Service Name and User ID in the Oracle8 ODBC driver set up?

For DSN I have tried the name of the EPM dataset and for service name I have tried "MyDatabase" and I have left UserID blank. When attempting to connect to the DB from the EPM (which uses ODBC) I get the following error message: ORA-12541: TNS: no listener.

Do I need to modify the tnsnames.ora and/or listener.ora files to provide a listener for the EPM software?

Between what Oracle and EPM documentation I have, I haven't figured this out yet. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,
