can someone tell me what I'm missing here? Sorry but you are just asking for it, the answer is 'Not reading any documentation'
The default passwords are
sys/change_on_install (avoid this account, and do not create your own objects in it)
system/manager (powerful administration user) scott/tiger (demo account)

as you are on personal oracle, usually you don't have to specify the connect string/host.
