Mr. Bakker is correct, and the starting of the database is definitely in the manual and has been in the manual for a very long time. Being a fairly frequent answerer to people with questions on Oracle and Linux, I know about the "just ask, don't look for answers first." If you check back, I don't know how many times the "don't run runInstaller.sh from the root installation directory run runIns.sh in the install/linux subdirectory" has been posted. I know I post it almost weekly.

Now, to answer the question:

In the /etc directory, you will find a file called oratab. This file gives the list of databases to automatically startup. If you change the last character in the file from N to Y, you can just type dbstart and the database(s) will start.

Otherwise, you can go into svrmgrl and type startup database_name;.

P.S. As to being a graphical method of doing it, not that I know of. I've been running Oracle for almost 10 years, and it's been the same since Oracle 6.0.
