I made a typo. The oracle field I am trying to populate has type varchar2(1000). It seems that the problem is with using SQL *Plus and the cause is that the SQL commands you can perform using the program have a limited length. At the cut-off point it simply ignores the rest of the command. I have decided to create an ODBC data source and perform the updates from anther program.

If there is a better way I would be very eager to find it.
