Absolutely untrue. There are situations where UNIX should be preferred over NT when it comes to running an Oracle database, but in many cases there are some very good reasons for choosing NT over UNIX. Most of the time it is a toss-up.

Having said that, I hedge my bets a bit by installing the MKS Toolkit when I am working with NT. I've been writing shell scripts long enough that I practically dream in Korn shell and I can normally port my UNIX scripts to NT with virtually no modifications. However, technically any thing that I can do with MKS Toolkit can also be done with Windows Scripting Host.

You will probably find that if you are in the UNIX world you'll find more Oracle databases then any other, but in the NT world there is probably more SqlServer work being done.

So go ahead and learn Oracle under NT. If you ever have to transition to UNIX you'll find that unless you are a DBA the differences aren't even worth spitting at. Received on Tue Sep 05 2000 - 22:35:46 CDT
