I started about the same way:
The following books got me of the ground EXPLORER Personal Oracle 8 ISBN: 1-57610-250-5 ($49.99) ORACLE PRESS - ORACLE DEVELOPER STARTER KIT -- ISBN:007-212047-9 ($50) and for 49.99 you can request the trial CD-Pack from ORACLE that includes everything and it has de documentation..

BTW the books come with all the software you need.
