Error 12203, Passwords 8iLite, win 2000

Hi,
I received a disk from Oracle with 8iLite on it and I have installed it on windows 2000.

Everything seems to work fine except, when I enter my username

                    password
                    host string

I enter system then manager, -- enter, and I get the error ORA-12203 comes up.

Help, I love learning about Oracle, and would love to program more in PL/SQL at home.

Any help be be greatly appreciated.
