There is a lot of talk about...but it really depends on your budget...

In a perfect world, just about every component in a db would be on a separate disk and separate controller with various mirroring and raid options employed...

Some basic advice would be separate as much as possible with preference probably going to the redo logs (warehouses possibly excepted)...
