An update on my problem: I can connect to the database with SQL Plus, ODBC (Microsoft + Oracle), and OLE DB (MSDAORA) but only if I do not specify a name (host string, server, service, data source, whatever). User ID and Password only. Odd. It is as though there is one and only one nameless database. I can't create a net service name (protocol adapter failure if IPC and no listener if TCP/IP) in net8. I can work with things as they are for the time being but I'm puzzled. Any ideas? VP
