I had a similar problem yesterday on Solaris.

are you running the installer from a directory other than where the runInstaller sript lives. Seemed to work for me when I was in the directory and did a ./runInstaller. Anything else failed.

I think the symptoms suggest that we may *both* have misconfigured somewhere along the line.
