It works, as long as you do not use any 8.1.6 specific features (of course). In fact, to use Java2 with Oracle 8.1.x, JDBC driver 8.1.6 is required (we tried getting 8.1.5 to work, but it just won't). The OCI driver wouldn't work on our system (HP UX 11.0, JDK 1.2.2-003), but the thin driver works quite well.
