        I prefer the simplistic approach -- order the maximum amount of memory that the hardware vendor supports ;-)

        The problem with more scientific approaches is that they require you to make assumptions about the job mix, the size of the tables that will be accessed simultaneously and are based on the premise that the application(s) have been designed and implemented in an optimal manner.

        If it is a question of justifying the additional memory to management just ask the suits how much growth they expect over the next five years. Since they all assume that they are such wonderful managers and that their competitors are asleep at the switch they will come up with optimistic estimates. You can then look very serious while punching random phone numbers into your pocket calculator (or PDA, if you have one) and then say "X GB should hold us." where X is the maximum RAM you can install in the box.
