JUST TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT MISTER, from my previous reply:

parameter file, to use a non-standard init.ora name. However, most likely your shared memory segment has an incorrect protection. Could you verify that with the ipcs command. AFAIK the protection mask is 4755 for everything and the setuid bit on for the Oracle executable and the listener software. And BTW how do you use dbstart. Usually (if that's in the system boot procedure) you should use su -c oracle dbstart (and su -c oracle lnsrctl) or oracle will start under root and it won't work. Let me know any outcome.
