I suggest you to take advantage of archive log mode. Then you don't have
to take your db down during backup and database can be restored to
momentum when crash occurred. Maybe you would like to read docs about
Oracle Recovery Manager (rman80) -- it supports scripting and gives you
choice to take incremental block level backups.
