I'd be interested in seeing what the problem was. We also run Oracle under OpenVMS and I did the exact samething you did. I verified that we had enough memory, which we did, and then I bumped up the db_block_buffers. I don't recall the error message, but like you, our database wouldn't start up. Fortunately we had the old init.ora file and could recover.

I'm not sure (I'm not a VAX Sys Admin) but you may need to first modify some system parameters via sysgen, then do an autogen, and then re-start your database with the new init.ora parameters.

I didn't do it because my company layed off our VAX Sys Admin. Good luck
