how to set properly a NLS variable

I use a NT workstation connection to an Oracle database installed on a NT.

On the server, we've changed the NLS_DATE_FORMAT to meet our needs. It seem to
have worked, because when I use the command show parameters, the value is correct.

But no date output use this new format. The only I've found is to set a environnement variable
on the workstation, and now it works. Is it a bug with NT, or it's the same for every OS? is there
something else to set?

merci
