Couple of comments:
First, allow for the fact that the other guy just went through a frustrating experience and is probably still vibrating like an irate chihuahua.
Second, it's easy to tell someone to "RTFM", but how reading should be required? I've been through the grinder a number of times with Oracle installations, and IMO you practically have to read the entire 18 inches or so of docs to really understand what's going on. And even then, the installers have more bugs than a porch light (It is my personal belief that Oracle does this on purpose to force purchase of the maintenance agt). In fact, once I get a particular install working for a given Oracle/Unix version set, I do a tape of the /oracle directory and use that for installs in the future. It's *way* easier than using Oracle's installer. In contrast, we once installed SQL Server just to see what it looked like. Took about 1/2 hour total, and was completely brainless, including the database creation. So if 3 RDBMS's are dead easy, and the fourth is killer difficult, I don't think it's realistic to blame the user for having problems with the fourth.
Having said that, once Oracle is up and running it has no equal in the speed, power, and stability department. But getting there is 99% of the battle. Received on Thu Feb 03 2000 - 12:12:27 CST
